Newbury: the route and what happens

Newbury Town Council organises the parade and service. Its most detailed published notice, for 12 November 2023, sets out the format it has kept since:

  1. The parade steps off at 10.30am from Pelican Lane.
  2. It marches the length of Northbrook Street and turns into Mansion House Street, where the Mayor of Newbury takes the salute.
  3. It continues to Market Place for a brief Service of Remembrance.
  4. The parade then marches past the War Memorial, where wreaths are laid, on the way into St Nicolas Church.

The 2026 event keeps the same shape. Newbury BID’s listing, which names Newbury Town Council as organiser, now reads: “Newbury’s Remembrance Sunday Parade & Service takes place on Sunday 8th November, and everyone is welcome to attend and honour those who have served and continue to serve. The parade will step off from Pelican Lane at 10:30am, making its way to the Market Place for the service, followed by wreath laying at the War Memorial and St Nicolas Church.” It runs 10.30am to 11.30am and is free (Visit Newbury, read 3 October 2026). In 2025 the same listing gave Sunday 9 November with identical times.

In 2023 the council placed a British Sign Language signer near the service and asked people who wanted a clear view to stand in the roadway near Zizzi in Market Place. Service sheets were handed out on the day and published on the council’s website beforehand. We will confirm whether both are repeated when the 2026 notice appears.

Thatcham: confirmed for 2026

Thatcham Town Council’s 2026 listing is already up:

  • Sunday 8 November 2026, 10.30am to 12pm. The parade starts from the Kingsland Centre car park, loops around The Broadway and goes up the High Street to the War Memorial.
  • The Mayor, the Reverend Mark Bennet and the Royal British Legion lead the service. After the main wreath laying, members of the public are invited to lay their own tributes.
  • The memorial is in a small garden at the junction of Brownsfield Road and London Road (A4), RG18 3HB.
  • Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November: a smaller Royal British Legion service at Thatcham Memorial Gardens from 10.45am, with the silence at 11am. The council asks people to arrive by 10.55am.

Hungerford

Hungerford’s parade in 2025 formed up outside the Town Hall at 10.15am, left at 10.30am and halted at the Bridge Street War Memorial for the service, with the High Street north of Park Street and Bridge Street closed from 10.30am to 11.45am, according to the town council’s 2025 event listing (archived 13 January 2026). Veterans were invited to join the parade and everyone to refreshments at the Royal British Legion Club afterwards. The live page now returns an error, and no 2026 notice has been published, so treat those times as last year’s until Hungerford Town Council confirms.

Getting there and parking

Market Place and Northbrook Street sit inside Newbury’s pedestrian zone, and the parade route is closed to traffic while it passes. Car park tariffs are on parking in Newbury; any published closure order will appear on Newbury roadworks and travel. The Sunday before, 1 November, is also the monthly Farmers’ Market in Market Place. The Newbury Lions fireworks at the racecourse are the night before Remembrance Sunday, on Saturday 7 November: see our fireworks page.
