West Berkshire collects on bank holidays, Christmas aside. Black bins run every three weeks, food waste weekly, and garden waste costs £45 to £80 by band.

Put your bin out on the bank holiday. West Berkshire Council collects rubbish and recycling on bank holidays as normal, Easter included, and only changes the dates over Christmas. That covers Monday 31 August 2026, the next one. The council’s rubbish collections page says collections continue on bank holidays “except over the Christmas period”, and recycling follows the same rule.

Everything has to be out by 6am, not 7am, and not “before the lorry comes”.

The 1, 2, 3 cycle

Your collection day never changes. What gets taken on it does. West Berkshire moved to a 1, 2, 3 pattern in 2025:

What Container How often
Food waste 23-litre green caddy Every week
Recycling Two green boxes and a reusable bag Every two weeks
Garden waste (subscribers) Green wheeled bin Every two weeks, same day as recycling
Everything else Black wheeled bin Every three weeks

Household batteries go on top of the black bin in a clear bag, not inside it.

The council published figures for the first full quarter of three-weekly black bins, October to December 2025 against the same months a year earlier:

  • 1,049 tonnes less waste to landfill and energy from waste, down 15%
  • 199 tonnes more dry recycling, up 6%
  • 260 tonnes more food waste, up 22%
  • total waste down 162 tonnes, about 2.3kg per household

There is no lookup on this page and there should not be. Rounds vary street by street, so use the council’s own find your next collection day tool, which also gives you a printable calendar PDF for the year.

What goes in which container

The two green boxes are split by material, and this is where most contamination happens. From the council’s recycling collections page:

Paper and card box. Newspapers, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, egg boxes, envelopes, cardboard tubes, and flattened cardboard no bigger than 85cm by 45cm.

Keep these out of it:

  • padded envelopes, unless you strip the bubble wrap out
  • cards and wrapping paper with glitter or foil
  • shredded paper, tissues and wallpaper
  • coffee and takeaway cups
  • tetra paks and juice cartons

Glass box. Bottles and jars only, rinsed, lids can stay on. Not window or greenhouse glass, not broken glass, not Pyrex, drinking glasses or light bulbs.

Recycling bag. Plastic bottles, food pots, tubs, trays and tubes, plus drink cans, food tins, metal sweet tubs and aerosols. Aerosols are out if they carry a hazard symbol, so oven cleaner goes in the black bin.

Food caddy. Plate scrapings, meat and fish, bread, fruit and veg peelings, cheese and eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and pet food. Two things catch people out: red meat bones are not accepted, and neither are oils, liquids or fats. Garden waste does not go in the caddy either.

Flats with a shared bin store use a purple bin for food waste instead of a caddy.

Garden waste: £45 to £80, and the year has just started

Garden waste is a paid subscription, and West Berkshire is unusual in pricing it by your council tax band rather than charging everyone the same. The 2026/27 service started on Monday 24 August 2026 and runs to Sunday 5 September 2027.

Council tax band First green bin, 2026/27
A £45
B £50
C £55
D £60
E £65
F £70
G £75
H £80

Each band went up £5 on last year. Points worth knowing before you pay:

  • there is no part-year option. Subscribe in June and you pay the same as someone who subscribed in August
  • a second to fifth bin costs £56 to renew, or £95 as a new subscription (£39 one-off set-up plus the £56 service charge)
  • unbanded properties, places of worship and eligible village halls pay £60
  • there are no concessions, even if you get council tax reduction
  • stickers are gone. In-cab technology identifies subscribers, so mark bins with your house number if several are presented together
  • anything left beside or on top of the bin will not be taken

Neighbours with small gardens are allowed to share one subscription, but it is a private arrangement and the crew will only collect from outside the subscriber’s address.

Garden waste can also go free of charge to either recycling centre, or into a home compost heap.

Bulky collections: £66.50 for up to five items

Bulky waste costs £66.50 for up to five items, booked and paid in advance. Sofas, tables, chairs, mattresses, beds, free standing furniture and fridges or freezers all qualify. A three-piece suite counts as three items, not one.

Booking is by phone only, on 01635 503828. The council does not take bulky bookings by email. Cancellations need 24 hours’ notice, on 01635 519080 option 2.

Carpets and fitted wardrobes are not collected, nor is hazardous, clinical or business waste. Items go out in the front garden by 6am, and the crews wear grey and orange Veolia uniforms.

Missed collection: two working days for food, five for the rest

The reporting window is shorter than most people assume, and it is not the same for every container:

  • food waste: two working days from your scheduled collection day
  • everything else: five working days

Report it through the council’s missed collection page, which also carries a service status notice worth checking first.

The crew will have left a bin hanger if they deliberately left your bin. The usual reasons are that it went out after 6am, it was overfilled or too heavy, the lid would not close, or the wrong things were in it. Sacks left beside a bin are never taken.

Recycling centres: permit and appointment, both required

There are two, and you cannot simply turn up at either:

Newtown Road, Newbury Padworth
Address Newtown Road, RG20 9AG Padworth Lane, Lower Padworth, RG7 4JF
Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm 11am to 6pm
Weekends and bank holidays 9am to 6pm 9am to 6pm
Asbestos Cement-bonded, by appointment Not accepted
Max vehicle length 8.2m 8.8m

Both need a permit and a booked appointment. The permit is free for West Berkshire households and read automatically by number plate cameras, so there is nothing to display. Non-residents cannot get one and pay £10.50 per visit on arrival instead.

Neither site admits pedestrians, unpermitted vehicles, or trade waste. Both close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Asbestos appointments at Newtown Road go through customer services on 01635 519080.

Soil and rubble is free up to two 50-litre bags or one item under 2000mm by 750mm by 700mm. Beyond that it is £4.20 per 25-litre bag, or £19 for a car load, rising to £124 for a transit van. The free allowance also lapses after four visits in four weeks.

Christmas

The council has not yet published the Christmas 2026 dates. Both its rubbish and recycling pages say only that details will be shared “closer to the time”. This page will carry them when they appear. The recycling centres are already confirmed shut on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
